How To Reset Nagios State

Every once in a while there is a hiccup in my internet service and every host that Nagios monitors shows DOWN. In those situations, I do not need the hundreds of the emails and text messages generated by Nagios.
Here is the procedure for resetting Nagios v3.5.0 running on MacOSX 10.6.8 via a MacPorts install:

/opt/local/var/nagios/nagios.init stop mv /opt/local/var/nagios/retention.dat /opt/local/var/nagios/retention.dat.OLD /opt/local/var/nagios/nagios.init start |
